Becksöndergaard: playful Copenhagen accessories with personality
Some brands are very good at making the practical bits of your wardrobe a lot more fun. Becksöndergaard is one of them. Bags come with unexpected colours and textures, scarves are covered in distinctive prints and even a humble pair of socks can involve glitter, stripes or a colour combination you didn’t know you needed.
The Copenhagen brand has been doing things its own colourful way for more than 20 years, building a particularly strong reputation for accessories that mix Scandinavian design with a playful streak. If you’ve landed here because you simply want to get shopping, you can shop the Becksöndergaard collection at Badger right now. Otherwise, read on and we’ll introduce you properly.
Why we think you’ll like it
Becksöndergaard describes itself as a Copenhagen fashion brand specialising in high-quality accessories, but that only tells half the story. The brand was created around the idea that personal style matters more than simply following trends, and its collections have become known for colour, contrast and distinctive prints.
That makes it a very natural fit at Badger. There’s plenty of Scandinavian influence in the clean shapes and practical designs, but Becksöndergaard rarely plays things too safe. A simple bag might arrive in a brilliant red or rich orange; a classic scarf can feature an unusual hand-drawn print; and socks become a very easy way of adding colour or sparkle without completely rebuilding your wardrobe.
There’s versatility here too. Becksöndergaard’s aim from the beginning was to design accessories that could be styled season after season, rather than creating something relevant for one fleeting trend. That mix of personality, usefulness and staying power is a big part of the appeal.
How long have they been around?
Becksöndergaard was founded in Copenhagen in 2003, so the brand has now been around for more than two decades. What started as a small project has grown into an international accessories business, but its Scandinavian roots and fondness for colour and print have remained central to the brand.
And it really did start small. Danish reference work Lex records that the business began as a hobby project in a basement in Jægersborggade, Nørrebro, Copenhagen. Not quite the glamorous fashion empire origin story you might imagine, but we rather like it.
Who’s behind the brand?
That would be friends Lis Beck and Anna Søndergaard, who founded the company together in 2003. The pair shared an interest in fashion and a desire to create accessories that were stylish and distinctive, but could also live beyond a single season.
The first product was the Granny purse, an oval purse made from eel skin. Anna Søndergaard later explained that she and Lis discovered the material during their first trip to Seoul, South Korea, and were immediately taken with it. The purse proved a success and was followed by scarves, leather goods and a steadily expanding collection of accessories.
There’s been plenty of change since then. Beck and Søndergaard sold a majority stake in the company to investment firm Valedo in 2013 as the business expanded internationally. Years later, a private investment consortium backed by the two founders bought the company back from Valedo, bringing Beck and Søndergaard back into its ownership.

Why Becksöndergaard?
No complicated origin story to unravel here. Becksöndergaard simply combines the surnames of its two founders: Beck from Lis Beck and Søndergaard from Anna Søndergaard.
It’s a name that's travelled considerably further than that Copenhagen basement since 2003, but keeping both founders quite literally in the brand name feels rather fitting.
What are their ethical credentials?
Becksöndergaard doesn’t claim that every product is made from organic or recycled materials, and its current collections use a broad mix of fibres and materials. What the company does publish is a set of policies covering its supply chain, materials, chemicals and animal welfare, alongside some more recent changes to particular components and packaging.
The brand says its responsible-business approach is grounded in the UN Global Compact’s Ten Principles, which cover human rights, labour, environmental responsibility and anti-corruption. Becksöndergaard doesn’t own its factories, with production taking place through suppliers in China, India, Turkey and Italy. It says it concentrates much of its production among a relatively small group of long-term suppliers, with the aim of developing closer relationships and improving transparency and working conditions.
On materials, Becksöndergaard says each collection includes selected designs using organic or recycled materials, alongside bags made using vegetable-dyed leather. Its animal welfare policy excludes angora, merino wool from sheep subjected to mulesing and materials from endangered species, while eel skins are sourced as by-products of the food industry.
There have also been some more recent changes. From Spring/Summer 2026, Becksöndergaard says the metal trims used on its products - including buckles, studs and hooks - are OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certified, meaning the certified components have been tested for harmful substances. The brand also says its hangtags are now FSC-certified, supporting responsible sourcing of the forest-based materials used for them.
The overall picture, then, is one of ongoing measures rather than a claim that the entire Becksöndergaard range is sustainable. If materials are particularly important to you, we’d always recommend checking the composition of the individual bag, scarf or accessory before buying.
What they’re known for
Bags are a big part of modern Becksöndergaard, ranging from compact crossbody styles to roomy shoppers and everyday totes. There’s a good balance between function and fun here. The Rallo Lottie, for example, is roomy enough for a 13-inch laptop and can be carried by hand or over the shoulder, while seasonal designs bring in woven textures, denim, bold colours and decorative details.
Then there are the scarves, one of the categories that originally helped put Becksöndergaard on the map. The brand has long been associated with colourful, hand-drawn prints and has worked with fabrics including silk, wool, modal, cashmere and cotton. Some are wonderfully soft and luxurious; others are small, bright silk scarves designed to be worn around your neck, tied into your hair or added to a bag.
And we need to talk about the socks. Because why should your feet miss out on all the fun? Becksöndergaard plays around with colour, ribbed textures, patterns and metallic yarns, turning an everyday essential into an easy little flash of personality. Current styles at Badger include everything from soft everyday socks to glittery designs that look particularly good peeking out above trainers, loafers or boots.
The wider collection has grown considerably over the years too. Depending on the season, you’ll find hats, purses, swimwear, hair accessories and other small additions to your wardrobe, all carrying that recognisably playful Copenhagen character.
What’s the damage?
Becksöndergaard is particularly good if you fancy treating yourself without committing to a complete wardrobe overhaul. At Badger, Becksöndergaard socks start at around £14, while scarves are around £57 and many of the bags sit between roughly £84 and £90 at full price.
That pricing reflects a brand focused on distinctive design and accessories intended to be used beyond one season, rather than throwaway fast fashion. Becksöndergaard itself emphasises high-quality materials and designs that can be worn season after season. Choose something you genuinely love, look after it properly and a great scarf or useful bag can earn its place in your wardrobe for years.
