Les Deux: Two worlds, one very good wardrobe
Smart enough to look polished, relaxed enough for pretty much anywhere - Les Deux has found a very useful middle ground. The Copenhagen brand combines clean Scandinavian design with preppy influences, laid-back sportswear and just enough detail to keep things interesting.
Born in Copenhagen, Les Deux has grown from a single homemade T-shirt into an international menswear brand. There’s a good story behind it, too, involving a chance meeting, two very different backgrounds and rather a lot of determination. Read on and we’ll fill you in.

Why we think you’ll like them
Les Deux has a knack for making smart clothes feel relaxed and casual clothes feel a little sharper. Think crisp shirts worn with trainers, substantial overshirts thrown over a tee and classic tailoring mixed with sportswear. Nothing feels overly formal, but neither does it look as though you’ve just grabbed the first thing you found on the bedroom floor.
That balance comes from the brand’s original idea of bringing two different worlds together. Les Deux describes its roots as a meeting of preppy and urban style, inspired by the contrasting personalities and backgrounds of its founders. That sense of duality has stuck around, with vintage and contemporary influences, sportswear and tailoring regularly rubbing shoulders in its collections.
The result is modern menswear that’s polished without being too pristine. Colours are generally easy to wear, silhouettes are clean and there’s plenty of texture from linen, wool blends, cotton twills and substantial woven fabrics.
We particularly like the fact that Les Deux clothes don’t rely on a huge logo to do all the talking. There’s often some discreet embroidery or a small brand detail, but fabric, cut and styling get plenty of room to shine.
How long have they been around?
The Les Deux story began in Copenhagen in 2011, when law student Andreas von der Heide met his future business partner through friends. The other man happened to be wearing a plain white T-shirt customised with military patches, and Andreas thought it looked rather good.
Rather than simply asking where he’d bought it, the pair decided there might be a business in it. Early Les Deux T-shirts were similarly simple affairs, combining white tees with military-style patches, and the fledgling brand was run from Andreas's small apartment.
It wasn’t an overnight success. Andreas has since recalled visiting around 50 Danish retailers with their clothes and being turned down by 48 of them. Happily, they kept going. More than 15 years later, Les Deux bears very little resemblance to a two-man T-shirt operation, with full menswear collections, international retailers and its own stores.

Who’s behind the brand?
Les Deux was founded by Andreas von der Heide and Virgil Nicholas, who came from strikingly different backgrounds. Andreas was a law student from the Copenhagen suburbs, while Virgil had come to Denmark from Congo as a political refugee.
It was precisely those differences that gave them their idea. Andreas has described the friendship as two people from different cultures discovering a strong connection and wanting to demonstrate what they could create together. Neither arrived with the conventional CV for building an international fashion business, and Andreas has said much of what followed was self-taught.
Their starting point was wonderfully straightforward: buy white T-shirts and add military patches. As demand grew, so did the collection, and the contrast between their backgrounds gradually became part of the design language of Les Deux itself - preppy mixed with streetwear, classic with contemporary and smart with casual.
Virgil subsequently left the business, while Andreas remained closely involved as co-founder. The little T-shirt experiment they began in Copenhagen has since developed into an international lifestyle brand with a sizeable team and customers well beyond Denmark.

Why "Les Deux?"
This one makes considerably more sense once you know the founder story.
Les Deux means “The Two” in French, referring originally to Andreas and Virgil and the two different backgrounds they brought together. Andreas has explained that Virgil spoke French and that, because they had international ambitions from the beginning, a French name felt appropriate.
The idea goes further than two founders, though. It also sums up the brand’s design philosophy. Les Deux is built around contrasts - preppy and urban, vintage and modern, formal and relaxed.
It’s a pleasingly simple name for an idea that still runs through the collections today.
What are their ethical credentials?
Les Deux is straightforward about one thing: making new clothing always has an environmental impact. Rather than describing itself as sustainable, the brand talks about reducing that impact and acknowledges that there’s still room for improvement.
Materials are one area where it's been making changes. Les Deux has set targets around increasing its use of what it describes as preferred fibres and materials, including more responsible cotton, and you’ll find recycled fibres in selected styles. At Badger, for example, the Kody Houndstooth Overshirt currently uses a heavyweight fabric made from 50% wool and 50% recycled polyester.
The company has also been working on measuring its environmental impact more systematically. Its published goals include calculating its carbon emissions to establish a baseline, improving visibility beyond its direct suppliers and developing a supplier assessment system. It has also set a goal of using 70% preferred fibres and materials in its products.
There’s a social side to its approach as well. Les Deux requires new and existing suppliers to sign a Code of Conduct covering areas including labour rights, chemicals and animal welfare, and publishes Modern Slavery Statements setting out its approach to risks within the supply chain.
Longevity is part of the conversation, too. Les Deux has previously operated its ReWear resale initiative and publishes a Care & Repair Guide designed to help customers keep clothing in use for longer. That fits rather neatly with the brand's own statement that the most responsible clothes are the ones you already own and wear.
It’s an approach based on gradual improvement rather than claiming to have solved fashion’s environmental challenges. For anyone looking more closely at how their clothes are made, Les Deux publishes its current responsibility commitments and future goals on its website.
What Les Deux is known for
Les Deux covers plenty of menswear territory these days, including T-shirts, knitwear, trousers, sweats, tailoring and outerwear. For us, though, the shirts and overshirts are particularly good.
An overshirt is one of those wardrobe additions that quickly starts earning its keep. Too warm for just a T-shirt but nowhere near coat weather? Overshirt. Need something casual that looks like you made an effort? Overshirt. Want another excuse to buy a really nice textured fabric? You can see where this is going.
Les Deux approaches them with its usual mix of clean Scandinavian styling and workwear detail. Take a look.
Les Deux shirts follow the same general philosophy. You'll find smart details and considered fabrics, but they're designed to work beyond formal occasions. Wear one buttoned up with chinos when you're feeling respectable, or loosen things up with jeans and trainers at the weekend.
Across the wider collection, look out for neat embroidery, collegiate and sporting influences, clean trousers and knitwear that sits comfortably between casual and smart. It's the contrast that makes Les Deux interesting - and also delightfully easy to wear.
What’s the damage?
Les Deux sits firmly in the premium menswear camp, and its pricing reflects the fabrics, construction and attention to detail that go into the clothes. This isn't clothing designed to be bought cheaply, worn briefly and replaced when the next micro-trend arrives.
Prices depend on the current collection, but shirts generally sit around the £90-£130 mark, while overshirts start at around £150. Heavier and more detailed styles cost more, with the Kody Houndstooth Overshirt currently coming in at £199. It's more of an investment than a fast-fashion shirt, but the emphasis is on versatile designs and substantial fabrics that you'll want to keep wearing.

Similar brands to Les Deux
If Les Deux has caught your eye, Scotch & Soda is well worth a look too. Both brands mix classic menswear with contemporary influences, although Scotch & Soda tends to bring a little more colour, print and Amsterdam character into proceedings.
Farah is another natural match, particularly if it's the smart-casual side of Les Deux you like. Its polos, shirts, knitwear and overshirts combine plenty of heritage with easy everyday styling, making it similarly useful when a T-shirt feels too casual but a blazer feels like overkill.
Then there’s fellow Danish brand Clean Cut Copenhagen. As the name suggests, clean lines are very much the order of the day, with understated knitwear, shirts and tees that share Les Deux's knack for making straightforward menswear feel polished.
Between the three, there should be more than enough to keep your wardrobe happily occupied.
